SL initiation 1: 6th of September

Instructions and a quest

1. Getting started

2. Choosing your Second Life viewer.

We strongly recommend that you upload Phoenix viewer from http://www.phoenixviewer.com/downloads.php . Remember to choose right operative system. The instructions in this document are for this particular viewer.

3. Getting into Second Life

4. HUMLAB in Second Life

TASK 1: Turn around by using the arrow keys (piltangenter). These are also the keys that make your avatar to walk. Look around you until you see Lindell Hall building. It is the replicate of the Lindell Hall that you find at Umeå university campus. The real Humlab is in the basement of that building.

5. One step further

At this point you can walk around the HUMLAB I island a while and try to find a place on the island following instructions. If you’d rather learn more about the viewer and the functions it has then you can jump over this task.

TASK 2: Go into the building through the doors by the bikes. Turn left and walk to the door that leads into the “hörsalsrundan”. How many dummies do you see? When you know the answer then get out of the room and turn right in order to pass through the building. Go through the back door and check out the vision of virtual campus and new classroom environment. When you have done this you are already a lot better at moving around. Now it might be a good time to get to know more about the viewer and its functions.

6. Getting used to the viewer

Here you see the avatar Hanna Velde. She will help you in SL during the classes and the RL version of her will be helping you with the technical initiation on 6th and 16th September in HUMLAB.

7. The next task – using the map and finding “home”

The next task is about using the map function in Phoenix viewer, and also about finding the area where the discussions on your course will be held. The direct address to the home area (SLurl) is: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/HUMlab%20II/205/72/25 .

You can get to this area directly from your web browser. But for the moment it is important that you also manage the map tool in SL.

8. Getting to know the discussion area and some new functions

9. Back to the discussion area

10. Discussion area – voice cells

11. Sound check

Last thing to do before you get to explore SL on your own. For the sake of the experiment/discussion it is important that you can hear the teacher in SL and that other people can hear you talk. You can check whether you can hear media or not by going to the Experiment area 2 shown on the big board. There is a water fall that makes a sound that you should be able to hear. If not, then you must wait for the technical support to help you out.

If you want to try out the voice chat you might want to ask someone in the same class to meet you in SL for some voice experimenting. Or if you are brave enough you could use the map function to get around in SL and meet other people. Green dots are other avatars. Just double click on the map and you’ll be meeting interesting new people. But please, think of SL being an extension of RL, don’t be rude or make any offending comments.

WELCOME TO SECOND LIFE!

See you at the technical initiation meeting on 6th and 16th September

Hanna Outakoski and Jim Barret
